Trae Young bids farewell to the Hawks during the game after being traded to the Wizards

Hug Watch Unfolds in Atlanta

On Wednesday night, a significant moment occurred in Atlanta during the Hawks’ game against the Pelicans, a game they won 117-100. Trae Young, sidelined due to injury and sitting on the bench, was reportedly traded to the Wizards.

As the news broke, cameras caught Young saying his farewells to teammates and staff, wearing a polo shirt and engaged in brief handshakes with staff during a broadcast by the FanDuel Sports Network Southeast.

The atmosphere at State Farm Arena was charged, even if no official word had been given yet. Rumors of a potential trade were circulating. Young took a moment to embrace a fan in the front row as the Hawks were comfortably ahead at 100-81 with just over seven minutes left in the game.

As he made his way off the court, there was a poignant moment. Young clapped for fans, but an announcer noted, “There’s a lonely man in the hallway.”

Reports indicate that Young’s time with the Hawks concluded on this night. He was traded for veteran players CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, with major sports outlets confirming the news.

This trade didn’t come out of the blue. Earlier in the week, it was revealed that his agent had been discussing a potential parting with the Hawks, suggesting he was open to a change. The Hawks’ decision to not offer him a maximum contract extension left him facing a $49 million player option for the next season, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team.

There were whispers that Young had expressed interest in being traded to the Wizards, and it seems both struggling teams found common ground in this exchange.

This marks the eighth season for Young with the Hawks, where despite some shining moments, the team has not transformed into a regular championship contender. The highlight of his career came in 2021 when the Hawks reached the Eastern Conference Finals after defeating the Knicks and Sixers.

Since that achievement, the Hawks (currently at 18-21) haven’t clinched a playoff series, falling in the first round during the last two seasons and missing the playoffs entirely in the previous two years. Young averaged 25.2 points per game and made the All-Star team four times, but a right quadriceps contusion limited his appearances to just ten games this season.

Now, Young joins a struggling Wizards team, sitting at 10 wins and 26 losses, but there’s hope in Washington that he will help drive improvements for the future.
