Tragic Incident: Snow Plow Hits and Kills Woman Alongside Her Husband

Tragic Incident in Massachusetts Parking Lot

A woman was killed and her husband injured on Sunday after a pickup truck, which was clearing snow, struck them in a parking lot in Massachusetts, according to transit police from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

Authorities responded to the scene around 2 p.m., finding that a contractor—not affiliated with the MBTA—was driving a Ford F-350 pickup truck the wrong way when the accident occurred. The woman has been identified as Noriko Oshiro Rapley, aged 51, while her husband, 47, remains unnamed.

Oshiro-Rapley was pronounced dead at the scene, and although her husband suffered injuries, they were not life-threatening. He is now recovering at home. The driver of the truck, whose identity has not been disclosed, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, reports indicate.

An MBTA representative described the event as “an unimaginably horrifying incident.”

A spokesperson for the MBTA expressed condolences, stating, “On behalf of the entire Transit Police Department and MBTA organization, we extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.” The MBTA confirmed Oshiro-Rapley’s death in a statement.

Investigators from transit police are collaborating with the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office to look into the incident. No charges have been leveled against the 33-year-old driver as of the latest updates.

Oshiro-Rapley had been a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) for approximately 20 years. In comments obtained by the media, an MGH spokesperson referred to her as an “extraordinary scientist” and a “kind and generous colleague.”

The spokesperson noted, “Noriko was an extraordinary scientist whose research was driven by rigor, creativity, and a deep dedication to understanding human biology. Her scientific rigor was matched only by her integrity, which was central to her humanity.” The statement continued, highlighting her interpersonal qualities and how she positively influenced those around her.

During the recent winter storm, Massachusetts State Police reported a significant increase in incidents, receiving 402 calls related to impaired vehicles and responding to 222 crashes.
