Suspect Arrested in Chicago Transit Fire Incident
On Tuesday, police reported the arrest of a man in connection with an incident on a Chicago transit train where a woman was allegedly set on fire during a dispute.
The victim, a 26-year-old woman, was traveling on a train near Clark and Lake Streets just before 9:30 p.m. when she became involved in a confrontation with a man estimated to be around 45 years old. According to NBC5 Chicago, the argument escalated, leading the man to pour a liquid on her and ignite it.
When the train arrived at the Clark and Lake station, the suspect fled the scene. The woman, severely burned, managed to exit the train and collapsed onto the platform. Paramedics from the Chicago Fire Department rushed her to a local hospital with critical injuries.
Witness accounts reveal a chaotic scene following the attack. “I saw a woman lying on the ground and they were trying to give her CPR,” one witness recounted, noting that she appeared to be in tremendous pain.
Others observed as paramedics placed her gently into an ambulance.
The suspect was taken into custody around noon in the Loop area. He was reportedly wearing an ankle monitor related to a previous aggravated battery case where he had been allowed to remain free. Additionally, he has a history of arson offenses.
Chicago Police Department arson detectives are still on the case, with officials stating that the Chicago Transit Authority is collaborating closely with them to facilitate the investigation and ensure the swift capture of all involved.
The Clark and Lake Station serves multiple lines, including Blue, Pink, Brown, Orange, Green, and Purple. The incident disrupted services for several hours, with regular train operations resuming around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
When authorities arrived on the scene, they found that the fire had already been extinguished.
