Trampling at political gathering in India results in 36 deaths and 40 injuries

A tragic stampede during a rally featuring popular Indian actors and political figures in Tamil Nadu has resulted in the deaths of at least 36 individuals, with 40 more sustaining injuries, according to the state health minister on Saturday.

Ma Subramanian shared with The Associated Press that many victims had passed away before reaching medical facilities, although the injured were reported to be in stable condition. Among the deceased were eight children, he noted.

The event, attended by tens of thousands, was addressed by Vijay, a well-known actor who has transitioned into politics, in the Karuru district.

Reports from Indian media, citing local authorities, indicated that as Vijay engaged with the enthusiastic crowd, a section of his supporters surged forward, leading to the stampede. Attendees had been waiting under sweltering temperatures, but Vijay arrived significantly late, as per official statements.

Subramanian described the rally as “undisciplined” and confirmed that an investigation would take place.

According to reports, at least 30 individuals fainted and had to be transported to a nearby hospital, while Vijay was addressing the crowd from his campaign vehicle. Observing the distress in the crowd, he ceased speaking and was later taken to a hospital himself.

His speech concluded shortly after he sensed a troubling situation among the attendees, as reported by the press.

In the aftermath, Vijay expressed his sorrow through a post, saying, “My heart is shattered.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, describing the “unfortunate incident” as deeply saddening. He shared his thoughts for the families who lost loved ones, hoping for their strength during this challenging period.

In southern India, especially Tamil Nadu, certain film stars hold a larger-than-life status, often compared to deities, due to a long-standing culture of hero worship. Many of them have entered politics, gaining substantial followings.

Vijay had retired from acting in 2024 and established his own political party, though it remains unclear if he intends to pursue a position in Tamil Nadu politics.

Stampedes in India are not uncommon, particularly during large gatherings. For instance, in January, around 30 individuals lost their lives when a massive crowd gathered to bathe in a sacred river during the Mahakumbh Festival, which is hailed as the largest religious gathering worldwide.
