Controversy Surrounds Minnesota Transgender Pitcher’s Exclusion from All-State Honors

A high school pitcher in Minnesota, known for her impressive performance, notably did not make it onto the annual all-state selection list despite a standout season. Marissa Rothenberger, a transgender athlete at Champlin Park High School, was excluded from the Minnesota Fast Pitch Coaches Association’s All-State Honors for 2025.

Previously, Rothenberger had earned a spot on the Class AAAA all-state first team in 2024 and also received all-tournament honors in 2025. This year, however, her stats showed a remarkable 12-1 record with an impressive ERA of 0.74 and a WHIP of 0.65, yet she was overlooked.

To give some context, Rothenberger’s 0.74 ERA ranked among the best in the state. She pitched five consecutive games in the postseason, allowing only one run over 35 innings while striking out 27 batters. Offensively, she contributed with a batting average of 5-16, including two doubles and three RBIs during the run to the 2025 Minnesota Softball State Championship.

In her 2024 season, her ERA was even better, sitting at 0.40. A source linked with the Minnesota Fast Pitch Coaches Association indicated that the all-state selection is determined by votes from member coaches, and candidates must be nominated by their coaches.

Fox News Digital sought input from Bryan Woodley, the head coach of Champlin Park’s softball team, regarding whether he had nominated Rothenberger. Meanwhile, Rothenberger’s participation in Minnesota girls’ softball has invoked public debate, lawsuits, and federal inquiries this year. On June 27, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services initiated a Title IX investigation concerning male athletes in softball who secured state championships.

Moreover, the state is already undergoing scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Education for policies that permit biological males to compete in women’s sports, which contradict President Trump’s executive order aiming to protect women’s sports. Some female athletes in Minnesota have even filed a lawsuit against the state due to their experiences competing against biological males.

An unnamed player shared her sentiments about the challenges posed by competing against trans athletes. “It’s not just physical; it’s mentally overwhelming to know there’s an advantage at play,” she expressed, highlighting her frustrations about how it can impact her feelings towards the sport.

Additionally, this same player has called out Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, criticizing his defense of trans participation in women’s sports. She argues that it’s unfair to permit males to compete with females, emphasizing concerns over safety and fairness.

The Champlin Park School District released a statement affirming its compliance with Minnesota High School League rules and state laws regarding athlete participation. They noted that all student-athletes in the district’s softball teams compete according to these regulations.

Ellison, in a previous statement, pointed out the various benefits of youth sports, asserting the importance of inclusion for all students. He stressed that excluding kids based on their identity only adds to existing challenges they face.

Rothenberger’s situation has sparked a larger debate, even igniting a public feud between Olympian Simone Biles and athlete Riley Gaines over the issue. This social media exchange followed Rothenberger’s team being acknowledged as state champions.

A recent survey highlighted a shift in public opinion, showing that a significant majority of Americans, including many Democrats, oppose allowing trans athletes to compete in women’s sports. In a study with over 2,000 participants, 79% of biological women expressed that trans athletes should not participate in female sports, and 67% of those identifying as Democrats agreed.
