Four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death at home on November 13, 2022. Madison Morgen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Zana Carnodor, 20, Ethan Chapin, 20.
Under Morgen's body, police found a knife sheath that would help break the case. It had DNA samples.

However, the Idaho State Police and the Oslam Institute failed to generate leads from the sample, according to testimony from Moscow police detective Brett Payne, the case's chief investigator.
The FBI then provided the name of Kohberger as a tip for the investigation on December 19, 2022, via its own resources, Payne testified.

Eleven days later, police arrested him at his parents' home in Pennsylvania.
Rata County Judge John Judge has signed an innocence plea on behalf of Coberger in his arrest over the May 2023 replacement charge. Coberger's attorneys later managed to move the case to ADA County under Judge Hippler.

His trial is expected to begin in August and is expected to grow over the next few weeks. If convicted, he could face death penalty.
