Transgender Candidate Sparks Debate in Maine Senate Race
A transgender candidate has garnered significant attention on social media after entering the Maine Senate race, following the withdrawal of former Democrat nominee Graham Platner, who stepped down amid sexual assault allegations.
Ashley Webb made headlines during a Democratic debate on Thursday, where she highlighted her background as a songwriter as part of her qualifications for the U.S. Senate.
During her introduction, Webb emphasized, “The biggest thing I’d like to get across is that we need unity. Whoever wins this nomination, we need to show up at the polls, vote for them, and ensure they win. Because what’s happening in this country isn’t right… immigrants are being targeted. They’re being rounded up like animals, and that’s unacceptable.”
She continued, voicing her concerns for the transgender community: “We’re being dehumanized. They say we want to hurt people. I don’t want to hurt anybody; I just want to use the bathroom. If they want me to use the men’s room, I will, but I don’t want to be assaulted.”
Webb also remarked on a recent incident in Biddeford, stating, “What happened… is unacceptable. We knew since January about what ICE has been doing with Alex and Renee,” referring to officer-involved shootings.
Following this, moderators Rob Caldwell and Phil Hirschkorn prompted each candidate to outline their qualifications for the “extremely important” role in Congress.
Webb jokingly noted her previous attempts at running for office, saying, “Oh, I ran for office several times. Didn’t win, but I did run. I’m also a songwriter and I write my own books. I prize transparency; I wouldn’t lie or deceive the public like we’re being misled right now.”
She criticized the current immigration enforcement tactics as “smoke and mirrors,” accusing supporters of pretending that victims have done something wrong.
“I think I’m just an angry citizen now, and if elected, I’d be an angry senator. That would be their worst nightmare,” Webb added.
Later in the debate, when asked about solutions for the national debt, which is approaching $40 trillion, Webb suggested cutting government expenditures, specifically referencing the reported $16 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Moderator Caldwell interjected, pointing out that this amount is “microscopic” compared to the federal budget.
When pressed for more impactful solutions, Webb expressed opposition to earmarking funds for local projects, albeit using the term “pork bellying” instead of pork barreling.
Webb’s comments quickly spread online, sparking confusion about the Democratic Party’s potential to shift the Senate seat in Maine, which has long been held by Senator Susan Collins.
In a tweet, David Harsanyi, a senior writer, remarked, “To be fair, that’s more relevant experience than Platner.”
Cliff Maloney, CEO of Citizens Alliance, reacted with astonishment, asking, “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN MAINE???!!!”
Conservative commentator Dave Rubin chimed in, questioning, “Surely you can’t be serious…”
