An NICU nurse in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is facing serious accusations of abusing a premature baby girl, leading to various injuries including bruises and broken bones.
The nurse, Kieran Ansley, 43, who identifies as a transgender man, was arrested earlier this month and charged with four counts of child abuse. NICU nurses provide critical care for newborns and premature infants, but in this case, things have taken a troubling turn.
In April, the mother of a four-month-old discovered her daughter with multiple injuries during a morning visit. Medical tests revealed significant damage, including fractures in the leg and numerous bruises across the child’s body.
Court documents noted that the comprehensive findings led to a diagnosis of pediatric physical abuse.
According to records from the 61st District Court in Grand Rapids, Ansley is facing multiple charges:
- Two counts of fourth-degree child abuse, each with a potential fine of around $175. The first count is a misdemeanor that could lead to a year in jail, while further offenses may be classified as felonies, increasing the sentence to two years.
- Two counts of second-degree child abuse, a felony, where the initial charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years, escalating to 20 years for repeated offenses.
Documents suggest that upon the parents’ early morning arrival on April 3rd, Ansley quickly intervened, attempting to prevent them from seeing their daughter. Ansley tried to alleviate their worries by claiming the infant had “slept through the night” and downplayed the seriousness of the blue discoloration on the baby’s tongue.
Despite the mother’s concerns about her daughter’s evidently discolored tongue, Ansley maintained that it was “not a big deal.” However, the mother reported the bruises, prompting an investigation that uncovered multiple entries into the baby’s room, with Ansley being present 27 out of 32 times.
The baby’s grandfather, Robert Steavens, shared with WOOD-TV, “She was born at 23 weeks: 1 pound, 1 ounce. And she made it through her due date, ready to go home. And then two days before she was ready to go home, this happened.”
Interestingly, in December 2025, a Facebook account linked to Ansley shared a post celebrating a gender-affirming surgery, showcasing Ansley in hospital attire.
Corewell Health, which oversees Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, stated they took swift action once the allegations arose and confirmed that Ansley is no longer part of their staff.
A spokesperson for the hospital expressed sadness for the patient and their family, emphasizing that patient safety is their highest priority and they have a strict stance against abusive behavior.
The baby girl, now 10 months old, is reportedly doing well at home, as noted by her grandfather. “We’re trusting in God and healing as a family and trusting the process will move forward,” he added.
