McBride on Bathroom Policies and Personal Safety
Representative Sarah McBride from Delaware, who is transgender, expressed that she didn’t advocate for using the women’s restroom at the Capitol out of a desire to be a martyr, but because of genuine concerns for her safety. She shared her thoughts during an appearance on a television show, discussing the complexities surrounding bathroom policies.
Host Camryn Bowden pointed out that McBride spoke up after a policy was introduced banning transgender individuals from using bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity. Bowden emphasized that McBride’s focus should be on broader issues like supporting Delaware families and not getting bogged down in bathroom disputes. Yet, some within the transgender community felt it was misguided for her not to confront this issue directly.
In response, McBride stood firm in her choice, stating it was for several reasons, one being her genuine fear of violence for simply using the women’s restroom. She articulated her concerns: “I don’t get why people want to fight over bathroom issues. If I were to dismiss the rules, someone could potentially harm me.” She highlighted the reality of the situation, noting, “If I disregard that rule, someone might take matters into their own hands.”
McBride clarified that her role was not to become a martyr but to serve as an elected representative. This comment took on a certain irony, considering her previous claims that it was Republicans who were seeking attention rather than her party. During her segment, she reflected on how members of Congress often begin as “normal” individuals but can become caught up in the chase for viral moments, potentially harming their own credibility in the process.
Interestingly, McBride has also made notable statements about her position as an ordained Presbyterian elder, suggesting that such a role could provoke strong reactions from conservative circles. “I can perform weddings and provide communion, which might just cause some heads on the right to explode,” she remarked in a previous interview.
