Transgender Utah woman shot parents dead, told police she would ‘do it again’: police

An “armed and dangerous” transgender woman accused of shooting and killing her parents in their Utah home sparked an hours-long manhunt this week and told authorities after her arrest that she would “do it again.”

Mia Bailey, 28, was arrested Wednesday and charged with 11 felony counts in connection with the murders of her parents, Joseph Bailey, 70, and Gail Bailey, 69, and the attempted murder of her own sibling, according to the Washington Police Department.

“The good news is, the suspect is in custody,” St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell said in a Facebook Live broadcast, informing residents of Bloomington Hills and Fort Pierce that they were no longer being asked to shelter in place. “Everyone is safe. No one else was injured.”

Police said Bailey broke into his parents’ home around 7 p.m. Tuesday and shot his father three times in the head and his mother. He told KSL.

She then went downstairs to find her brother and his wife locked in a bedroom, shooting out the door and fleeing the scene. Both survived. Bailey later told police she didn’t care if her brother died in the shooting, court documents confirmed. From KUTV.

Police said Bailey went upstairs to see if his parents were dead, then fled the home in a yellow Kia Soul.

“Mia explained that she returned to her father, who was lying on the ground, and shot him a second time in the head to ensure he was deceased,” police wrote in an arrest affidavit reviewed by KSL. “As she did so, Mia returned to her mother and shot her in the head to ensure she was deceased.”

Police cornered Bailey the next day, about seven miles away in the St. George area. KSL video showed the suspect surrendering peacefully to 12 armed officers. Police said he surrendered his gun before being handcuffed.

Officers initially pursued Bailey on Tuesday, but before he could be taken into custody, he pulled a gun from his waistband, put it to his head and disappeared, according to KUTV.

Bailey later told police he “did not regret his actions and had no intention of changing them,” according to the affidavit.

“Mia told police she went to the home with the intention of killing her parents,” the affidavit states. “Mia stated, ‘I would do it again. I hate my parents.'”

According to 5th District Court records reviewed by KSL, Bailey filed a petition to legally change her name and gender in July 2023. She was granted both in August 2023, and the court said, ” [Bailey] “Has transitioned to the gender requested in the application and has transitioned in a consistent manner for at least six months,” including “evidence of appropriate clinical care or treatment related to gender transition or change provided by a licensed health care professional.”
