Americans planning to visit Cambodia should now be mindful of a new advisory from the U.S. State Department, which highlights various security concerns throughout the country.
As of September 15, the agency has issued a Level 2 advisory, suggesting travelers “Exercise Increased Caution” due to issues like crime, civil unrest, and the presence of unexploded ordnance.
Cambodia, located in Southeast Asia, shares borders with Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. It’s a popular destination thanks to its historical sites and natural beauty.
While the country as a whole is classified under Level 2, specific regions have received a Level 4 warning, meaning “Do Not Travel.” The recommendation against travel primarily affects areas along the Cambodian-Thai border due to ongoing unrest in that region.
Phnom Penh, the capital, also sees heightened caution due to prevalent crime rates. Furthermore, the provinces including Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, Preah Vihear, and Kampong Thom are flagged for risks related to unexploded ordnance, making them less safe for visitors.
For those who do venture to Cambodia, the State Department shares a stark piece of advice: “Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.” It also suggests that travelers purchase insurance that covers evacuation, medical incidents, and trip cancellations.
Absolutely crucial, the advisory emphasizes the stringent drug laws in Cambodia. With a strict “zero-tolerance” approach to drug offenses, even small amounts can lead to serious consequences, including arrest and lengthy prison sentences.
Moreover, there is a severe risk that crimes targeting tourists may involve drugged drinks. The guidance suggests avoiding drinks from strangers and never leaving beverages unattended.
