CNBC host Andrew Ross Sorkin on MSNBC's “Morning Joe” on Thursday claimed that travel to the US had fallen as foreigners said they “don't like” Trump administration policies.
When asked about President Donald Trump's tariffs, Sorkin said: One is a historical perspective. I think we may have mentioned that in the broadcast before, but you go back to 1930 and go back to Smoot Holy, then you'll see what happened to the world trade a year later. It has decreased by 60%. That's what happens when you take part in a trade war. It's back and forth. That would be a retaliatory effort. That's our place. And if that continues, we imagine we will see in the next year and say that world trade has declined in a very important way. ”
He added: I talk to people in the travel industry, people who know they are involved in airlines, hotels and everything else, but this trade war turns into something broader than a trade war. People from other countries have not come to the US as they used to. You're going to see a travel drop. Foreigners say we literally don't like these people. And it has economic consequences, but it has a much broader and deeper impact that is not calculated by what is going on here. ”
