Travis Kelce ‘heartbroken’ over Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade shooting

Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce said he is “heartbroken” about the fatal shooting that occurred just as the 2024 Super Bowl parade ended in Kansas City on Wednesday.

Kelce released a statement calling Wednesday’s events a “tragedy.”

“I am heartbroken by the tragedy that occurred today.” Kelce wrote to X. “My heart goes out to everyone who came to celebrate with us and to everyone affected. KC, you mean the world to me.”

Kelce and other Kansas City teammates had just finished a Super Bowl rally celebrating the team’s second consecutive championship when shots rang out near Union Station.

The shocking violence claimed the life of at least one victim, injured 21 others and ruined what was supposed to be a day of festivities in the city.

The gunfire came from just west of Union Station, and Chiefs fans dove for cover in the wake of the gunfire.

The team issued a statement after the shooting confirming that all players, staff and their families are safe.

The Chiefs called the incident an “unreasonable act of violence” and said, “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.”

After the shooting, Mahomes wrote a short statement on social media.

Three people were taken into custody in connection with the shooting, police announced at a news conference.

Two of them were taken into custody immediately after the shooting occurred.

The U.S. House of Representatives held a moment of silence for the victims of Wednesday’s shooting at the urging of Missouri and Kansas Reps. Sharice Davids, Mark Alford, Ann Wagner and Emanuel Cleaver. .

The NFL expressed sadness over the day’s events.

“We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred today at the end of the Chiefs’ rally in Kansas City,” the league said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected.

“We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel.”

More than 800 police officers were at the rally when the shooting occurred.

The FBI was on site to assist with security for the event and assist local law enforcement with the investigation. The department told the Kansas City Star.
