Travis Kelce Reflects on Chiefs’ Upsetting Season
Travis Kelce took a moment to gather his thoughts after witnessing what seemed like the collapse of the Chiefs dynasty.
Initially, the tight end in Kansas City steered clear of the media following the team’s unfortunate Week 15 loss against the Chargers. This defeat not only eliminated them from playoff contention for the first time since 2014 but also resulted in star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffering a season-ending torn ACL.
After a few days of reflection, Kelce addressed the loss during Wednesday’s episode of the “New Heights” podcast. He stressed how “sad” and surreal it felt for both the team and himself, especially with retirement chatter surrounding the 36-year-old tight end, as they watched their franchise leader’s season potentially come to an end in what could have been his last game.
“We lost our quarterback, Patty Mahomes—man, big brother, fearless leader, and the face of our franchise—due to the ACL,” Kelce shared with his brother Jason, who is a former Eagles star.
“Watching your teammates fall is never easy,” he continued. “Some guys rose to the occasion, but unfortunately, others couldn’t make it back onto the field.”
Despite dropping two consecutive games, the Chiefs showed signs of life late in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to just three points with less than two minutes left on the clock.
Then, Mahomes twisted his knee during an awkward tackle.
Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew managed to push the Chiefs deep into enemy territory, but an interception with 20 seconds remaining dashed Kansas City’s playoff dreams.
“The season was going pretty well, and here we are, in the fourth quarter, trying desperately to hold on to our playoff hopes. That kind of bizarre play when you’re down 1-5 makes it feel unreal,” Kelce reflected.
“It’s just the worst, dude,” he expressed. “For someone who works so hard and consistently puts themselves on the line—he’s really maximizing what this football journey offers, and it’s just tough to see.”
Mahomes’ injury added to a painful loss, seemingly ending a remarkable stretch where the Chiefs had made ten straight postseason appearances, winning four out of five Super Bowls.
Kansas City suffered a disappointing Super Bowl defeat to the Eagles in New Orleans, and by Week 15, their record stood grim at 6-8.
Still, Kelce pressed on during what might be his final year of a stellar career. He may have played his last game with Mahomes, but he’s not yet ready to call it quits. He assured Chiefs fans that the team would keep fighting until the very end.
“Chiefs Kingdom, we’re going to give it our all,” he promised. “There’s no doubt about it. We have our way of doing things, and Coach [Andy] Reid is on the right path. If we step onto that field, we’ll do it right and keep working on the issues to finish with pride.”
“If there’s a game, I’m in. I want to play, no matter if it’s a playoff-deciding game or just a regular one,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to the game.
The Chiefs are slated to face the Titans in Tennessee on December 21st.
