Skeletor’s Character Reimagined
In a recent interview, director Travis Knight shared his thoughts on Skeletor, the notorious villain from “Masters of the Universe,” labeling him as “the embodiment of toxic masculinity.” This perspective adds an intriguing new layer to the character, who has long stood as the enemy of He-Man.
Knight spoke with Jared Leto, the actor set to portray Skeletor, discussing how they aimed to develop a unique version of this iconic character. “Jared came to us because he has a deep love for Skeletor and wanted to bring something special to the role,” Knight explained. “In the end, we were thrilled with what we created together.”
Skeletor first emerged in the early ’80s as part of Mattel’s well-known toy lines. His striking appearance—a golden skull, a purple outfit, and a cackling laugh—quickly made him a memorable figure in comic book history. Marked by cruelty and arrogance, he sought to eliminate He-Man and gain dominion over the realm of Eternia.
Knight mentioned that while the original Skeletor was compelling, he felt it was important to craft a different interpretation in the film. He recalled that the character was complex—scary yet funny—which he found pretty fascinating. “I kind of wish someone had reimagined him before,” he reflected.
The reboot of Masters of the Universe has been in the works for quite some time. Knight emphasized that earlier scripts had depicted Skeletor with a more traditional golden skull visage. “I told them, ‘That’s not it—Skeletor’s face is a skull!'”
Fans can expect to see this new take on June 5, 2026. This film marks the franchise’s first return to theaters since 1987. The trailer has already stirred up excitement, showing a fresh origin story for He-Man, who is initially portrayed as an office worker. In a humorous moment, his boss admonishes him for an obsession with “otaku stories and sword stories,” before he embarks on an epic journey back to his roots in Eternia.
The previous film was noted as a cult classic, featuring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, setting a high bar for the upcoming reboot.
