Trea Turner makes spectacular mic’d-up play at MLB All-Star Game

Trea Turner put in a spectacular performance during the American League’s 5-3 win over the National League in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday night, despite it being broadcast live.

The Philadelphia Phillies shortstop, along with All-Star teammates Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm, were microphoned during the bottom of the second inning at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

With one out and a runner on first base, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a powerful grounder toward center field.

Turner reacted quickly, running to his left, throwing himself over the edge of the infield to pick up the ball and throwing it from his belly to get Yordan Alvarez out, who was running to second base.

Turner had a smile on his face after finishing the game.

When the replay aired on Fox, announcer John Smoltz was in awe.

“That’s the best play by a guy on the mic,” he said.

Harper was delighted to see his teammates yelling, “Let’s go. Are you kidding me?”

It’s one thing to make a jaw-dropping play in the All-Star Game, but it’s another to do it with the microphone on.

Others haven’t been so lucky this season.

Dodgers guard Kiké Hernandez knows all too well what it feels like to be microphoned and have it go wrong.

The Dodgers’ 2-1 win over the Yankees in June was broadcast live on Apple TV+ with announcers Wayne Randazzo and Dontrelle Willis.

Gleyber Torres hit a grounder to Hernandez at third base.

At the time, Willis asked Hernandez, “What about you guys? [a] “It’s a very close-knit club. Where does that come from?”

Willis said he could throw it back after the pitch, but the ball bounced off Hernandez’s groin and Torres hit the throw back, preventing Hernandez from making a play.

Another embarrassing moment was broadcast live on TV between Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña and third baseman Alex Bregman, who were both wearing microphones during the game against the Mets.

The two chased down a pop fly thrown by Jeff McNeil and watched as the ball landed between them.

There was no communication between teammates and each seemed to be hoping the other would catch the ball.
