New Sanctions on Iranian Officials Amid U.S. Military Threats
As tensions rise over a potential U.S. military action against Iran, the Trump administration has introduced new sanctions targeting Iranian officials. This announcement came from the Treasury Department, which stated that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has “taken additional actions against Iranian officials responsible for the regime’s brutal crackdown on its own people.”
One of the sanctioned officials is Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni Karagari, who oversees the Law Enforcement Forces (LEF), a group linked to the deaths of many peaceful protesters, according to a statement from the treasury.
Additionally, OFAC has designated Babak Morteza Zanjani, an investor known for embezzling significant oil revenue belonging to Iranian citizens. After being released from prison for money laundering, Zanjani has financially supported projects associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian regime as a whole. OFAC also flagged two digital asset exchanges that are connected to his activities.
This announcement follows preparations by the Trump administration for potential military interventions against Iran.
Recently, President Trump issued a stark warning on Truth Social, indicating that if Iran fails to negotiate a nuclear deal, the U.S. may resort to military force. He mentioned that a significant naval fleet, led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, is rapidly approaching Iran with the readiness to act if necessary. The hope, however, is that Iran will engage in negotiations for a non-nuclear agreement that would be advantageous for all involved.
The growing list of military options being considered includes potential U.S. raids inside Iran, which diverges from earlier, more restrained considerations. Reports suggest that the U.S. aims to further weaken Iran’s nuclear capabilities and its leadership in response to the ongoing protest suppression in the country.
