UAB Blazers Part Ways with Head Coach Trent Dilfer

The UAB Blazers have terminated head coach Trent Dilfer’s contract following a recent defeat against the Florida Atlantic Owls, which brought the team’s record to 2-4 for the season.

Dilfer, a Super Bowl champion, joined UAB as head coach before the 2023 season after a successful stint at the high school level. However, he did not manage to achieve a winning record during his time at the college.

Mark Ingram, the Athletics Director, stated, “We’ve decided to part ways with head football coach Trent Dilfer. Unfortunately, we believe his performance has not met the winning standards we strive for in our program. This decision is made in the best long-term interest of our team.” He also announced that Alex Mortensen would take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Ingram expressed gratitude toward Dilfer, wishing him well and acknowledging his hard work and commitment at UAB, even though it didn’t translate to success on the field. “The young men who played for him will become better people because of his influence,” he added.

The tipping point for UAB came during a disappointing 53-33 loss to Florida Atlantic, marking the Owls’ third win this season.

Before his tenure at UAB, Dilfer coached at Lipscomb Academy in Tennessee from 2019 to 2022, where he amassed a 44-10 record. His NFL career spanned 13 years, playing for teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Baltimore Ravens, the Seattle Seahawks, the Cleveland Browns, and the San Francisco 49ers.

He is notably recognized for winning a Super Bowl with the Ravens.
