Trent Grisham adjusting to role as Yankees’ fourth outfielder

TORONTO — Trent Grisham had more than 500 at-bats in each of the past three seasons before becoming a Yankee.

Monday was his second start in three days, but his fourth start in the Yankees’ 17th game of the season, a 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays.

As the Yankees’ fourth outfielder, Grisham has had to adjust to a change of pace this season, but manager Aaron Boone expects the defensively gifted center fielder to play a big role throughout the year. I kept saying.

“He was an everyday player, but obviously he’s not in that situation.” [here] And we have to make the most of it,” Boone said before the game at Rogers Center. “I think it was a great outcome from an attitude standpoint and from a work standpoint. Just because you haven’t done the job before doesn’t mean you can’t be successful in the role. That’s the expectation.

“He hasn’t had many minutes yet, but there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t be valuable in a small role. But you know that could inevitably change at any time.”

Grisham was 0-for-2 at bat, including a walk, but with one out in the fifth inning, he attempted to steal second base and was removed from the game, with Anthony Volpe standing at the plate.

This season, he had zero hits in 10 at-bats, two walks, and four strikeouts.

Grisham started Monday because Boone wanted to get Aaron Judge as a one-day DH during the three-game series on turf.

He chose Monday, giving Grisham, a left-handed hitter, a chance to play against right-hander Chris Bassitt and Giancarlo Stanton being benched.

“We didn’t want to have the judges on the carpet all three days, especially in the day game after the night game,” Boone said. “and it is [Grisham] He will be making his second start in three days, so I hope he can improve his condition as much as possible. ”

Gerrit Cole threw from 60 feet Sunday and had Monday off.

He is expected to pitch again on Tuesday.

“He’s going to continue to throw this week and increase his velocity. He’s already increased his volume a little bit, but I think he’ll get to 75 degrees.” [feet] We’re going to make even more progress this week,” Boone said.

Volpe singled in the third inning, giving him his sixth stolen base of the season. He hit comfortably in 12 of 16 games, posting a .373 batting average and 1.006 OPS. …Ron Marinacio, called up from Triple-A on Saturday, pitched two efficient innings in relief of Lewis Gil. “I like that he can get his fastball where he wants it more consistently,” Boone said.
