Yankees Face Key Roster Decisions Ahead of 2026 Season

The Yankees have some important roster choices to make on Tuesday, but the most significant decision about the 2026 season lies beyond their control.

The pivotal question is whether Trent Grisham will accept a one-year qualifying offer worth $22.025 million or seek a multi-year contract elsewhere. His choice could shape the Yankees’ offseason strategy significantly.

If Grisham, who had struggled with a .213 batting average and a .697 OPS prior to his breakout last season, chooses to accept the offer, a considerable amount of funding will be tied up in center field. This, in turn, may influence the competition among other outfielders.

There’s speculation around how Grisham’s decision could impact players like Cody Bellinger. Would his presence allow the Yankees to pursue a more expensive outfielder or first baseman? Or might they consider keeping both and assigning them utility roles similar to what Bellinger did last season? Alternatively, if Bellinger remains with the team, what happens to Jason Dominguez and Spencer Jones’ chances? If salary constraints come into play, could Grisham even turn out to be a trade asset?

Now, if Grisham—who’s unique as a 29-year-old center fielder coming off a solid season with 34 home runs—declines the qualifying offer, he would very likely enter free agency and have the opportunity to sign a longer deal, albeit possibly hindered by draft pick compensation for the Yankees. In that case, the Yankees might feel compelled to acquire Bellinger, freeing up left field for Dominguez and giving Jones, who’s come up as a center fielder, a better shot at the roster.

A lot rests on Grisham’s choice which could either validate last season’s performance or deem it a one-time occurrence. The shortage of center field options in free agency influenced the Yankees to extend the qualifying offer, and it would be pivotal if Grisham opts out.

“He had a great year for us,” noted GM Brian Cashman recently.

On a busy day filled with roster maneuvering, the Yankees will also need to decide which prospects to protect from the impending Rule 5 draft.

Jones, coming off a remarkable 35 home runs in the minors, is a crucial candidate for the 40-man roster, alongside right-handed starter Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. Other prospects in the mix include starting pitchers Brendan Beck, Bailey Dees, Allen Facundo, Henry Lalane, Zach Messenger, Brock Selvidge, relievers Harrison Cohen and Eric Laiselman, and top pitching prospect Chase Hampton—his situation is slightly complicated due to rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery—as well as infielder TJ Rumfield.

If any of these players are removed from the roster, they could be picked by another team during the draft on December 10. These selected players would officially join their new teams if they remain on the active roster for the entire 2026 season.
