Trevon Diggs joins the Packers after being let go following a disagreement with the Cowboys

Trevon Diggs didn’t stay a free agent for long after being released by the Cowboys on Tuesday.

Reports indicate the 27-year-old cornerback was claimed off waivers by the Packers on Wednesday, offering him a shot at postseason play, as the team has already secured a spot for Week 18.

Diggs, a two-time Pro Bowler, had a bit of a fall from grace, being cut by Dallas following a victory over the Commanders on December 25. This came after he was said to have had an argument with head coach Brian Schottenheimer regarding travel plans for Christmas.

Schottenheimer described the situation as “one of many factors,” emphasizing that it wasn’t the sole reason for the decision. He insisted, “I’m not the Grinch who stole Christmas. I love Christmas and I love my family,” but there’s a protocol in place that wasn’t adhered to.

It seems Diggs had wished to spend more time with his family in Maryland and requested additional time after the game, while the Cowboys preferred he return with the team.

The head coach noted that the release stemmed from a combination of performance issues and other occurrences, but the feud over the holiday travel plans was likely the breaking point.

“The first time I heard about it, Trevon approached me after the game,” Schottenheimer said. “I’m celebrating a significant win, and I laid out the rules we’ve always followed. We go up as a team and come back as a team. He made a decision, but that wasn’t the only reason for it.”

Just before the 2023 season, Diggs had signed a massive five-year, $97 million contract extension. However, injuries have plagued his time on the field, with just two games played in 2023, 11 in 2024, and eight this season.

Since marking an outstanding 11 interceptions in 2021, he has registered only six interceptions overall. Now, as he joins the Packers, he faces a defense that needs to adapt following the loss of star edge rusher Micah Parsons, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL.

The Packers have secured the No. 7 seed in the NFC and will compete against either the Bears or the Eagles in the opening round.

Interestingly, Parsons and Diggs played together in Dallas before Parsons made a surprising switch to the Packers earlier this season, which created quite a buzz. Following the trade, he shared a message on social media with a salute emoji that read, “I’m back.”

On a related note, Diggs’ older brother, Stefon Diggs, has been in the news recently too, amid allegations of physical altercations with a female employee over financial disagreements. He’s set for an arraignment on January 23, facing one felony count of strangulation and one misdemeanor charge of assault, which he has denied through his attorney.
