new Fans are in for a treat at this year’s Dick’s Sporting Goods Perfect Game All-American Classic, where star power isn’t just limited to the players.
Baseball legends Trevor Hoffman and Ryan Klesko will both take on the role of game managers, as was revealed on Tuesday.
This prestigious event showcases the top 60 high school baseball players across North America, and will be held at Petco Park on August 17, a venue associated with the San Diego Padres.
The All-American Classic first launched in 2003 and has consistently attracted major talents from the MLB, including Bryce Harper, Gerrit Cole, and Francisco Lindor, among others.
To date, 850 out of 1,126 former participants have been drafted into MLB, with nearly 300 selected in the first round.
Hoffman, who ranks second in MLB history for saves, has been a part of this event for over a decade and currently serves as its honorary chairman. He expressed his enthusiasm for being in the dugout this year and interacting with young athletes.
“It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the next generation,” he remarked. “When you wear your uniform, it changes the interaction; it feels more genuine.”
Klesko shared his view on the importance of events like this in shaping a player’s career. He reminisced about how these platforms were essential in his own journey to becoming a big leaguer.
“This kind of exposure, along with guidance from coaches, is invaluable,” Klesko noted, admitting that he is looking forward to being a part of these athletes’ journeys.
The coaching staff for this year’s game is also impressive, including other former MLB stars like Fil Nevin and Charlie Manuel. Hoffman noted that everyone involved is eager to support the development of young talents.
Daron Sutton, who has been the announcer for this event since 2009, pointed out that while the event has evolved, elite talent continues to shine. He enjoys the spontaneous moments that unfold during the games, likening them to a traditional All-Star event.
Moreover, a philanthropic aspect is woven into the All-American Classic. Brad Clement, Executive Vice President of Perfect Game, highlighted the initiative that brings players to Rady’s Children’s Hospital to support those battling serious illnesses.
Brought together by the chance to mentor the next generation, Hoffman and Klesko have emphasized that their mission goes beyond baseball; it’s also about impacting families and communities.
“It’s about guiding them through a challenging process, whether it’s training or education,” Klesko explained. “We want to help make it less daunting.”
Ultimately, Hoffman believes the event truly showcases the incredible talent emerging in youth baseball today.
