Trey McBride hopes the tight end role will improve following $76 million agreement

Nashville’s Tight End Summit Highlights Trey McBride’s Rise

Nashville, Tennessee – Trey McBride found himself in a room filled with around 80 tight ends during a recent meeting at Vanderbilt. He stood out, not just as one of the younger players but as a significant member of the Arizona Cardinals since being drafted in the second round from Colorado three years ago.

This offseason, the Cardinals recognized his contributions by securing him with a substantial four-year, $76 million extension, making him the highest-paid tight end in the league.

Interestingly, George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers, who co-founded the Tight End University (TEU) with Travis Kelce and Greg Olsen, quickly surpassed that figure with his $76.4 million extension. Still, McBride found himself in elite conversations among tight ends across the NFL, highlighting his growing reputation.

Kittle even used McBride’s highlights to illustrate what it means to excel in the position during a recent meeting at the TEU’s fifth annual work summit. McBride expressed his gratitude: “I think it’s astonishing to be acknowledged by people you’ve admired and who’ve paved the way.”

The moment of his extension’s confirmation came unexpectedly while he was on the golf course—with mixed feelings since his time as the highest-paid tight end was brief. However, McBride hopes this encourages his peers to aim for even larger contracts. “It’s great that our position is gaining recognition and value,” he added.

McBride attributes much of his success to a solid partnership with quarterback Kyler Murray. Last season, he made a significant impact, successfully catching 111 of 147 targets for 1,146 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games—even scoring against double or triple coverage at times.

“Proving to him that I can be trusted in crucial moments is an honor,” McBride stated. “I want to maximize my plays for him and build that connection.”

He feels a sense of excitement about continuing to develop their synergy. “It’s a huge relief and I’m eager to keep enhancing that connection with Kyler,” he remarked.

While McBride represents the younger talent among the tight ends, his journey illustrates a broader narrative of success in his position—one that reflects not only skill on the field but also a rising prominence in the NFL landscape.
