Trial of Karen Read: Snowplow operator states he did not see a body at the scene of the police officer's death in Boston

Karen Reed’s case took another turn as the snow plow driver, Brian “Lucky” Lafran, testified he did not notice the body of Officer John O’Keefe during his multiple passes while clearing snow. This incident occurred in January 2022, and it happened as O’Keefe lay on the ground in a snowstorm.

Lafran stated that O’Keefe’s last known activity was at about 12:30 AM, and responders did not arrive until around 6 AM. He recounted his experience to defense attorney David Jannetti from a pass made around 2:45 AM, where he claims he saw nothing unusual while cleaning the street.

While being questioned by prosecutors, Lafran noted he had good visibility due to the snowplow’s lights. Still, he insisted he never saw O’Keefe’s body, although he did observe a Ford Edge SUV parked outside a nearby home on his later trip around 3:30 AM. Interestingly, Lafran had made a point to mention that the occupants of the house rarely parked on the street.

As tensions rose in the courtroom, prosecutor Hank Brennan pressed Lafran about potential threats he faced from bloggers concerning his testimony, to which Lafran firmly stated he had experienced no such intimidation. This back-and-forth added an unexpected layer to the already complex case.

Meanwhile, Karina Kolokitas, a friend of both Reed and O’Keefe, took the stand next. Kolokitas testified that Reed did not seem overly intoxicated during their last encounter at a bar prior to O’Keefe’s death. She mentioned a peculiar exchange between Reed and another witness, Jennifer McCabe, raising questions about what transpired that evening.

Overall, defense attorney Grace Edwards expressed optimism about the proceedings, pointing out the day had yielded crucial testimonies that might create reasonable doubt about Reed’s involvement. As the trial continues, the emotional weight of the testimonies and the complexity of human relationships weave a web that is anything but straightforward.
