During a court session on Monday, an umpire saw disturbing images of the wounds inflicted on a much-loved royal, who was brutally attacked by a man who stabbed her more than 20 times, according to officials.
The victim’s 43-year-old daughter, who was deeply affected by the loss of Allison Russo, occasionally broke down in tears while providing her testimony.
Evidence related to the tragic case revolves around the accused, Peter Zisopoulos, 36.
The defense attorney cautioned the judge, indicating that the forthcoming evidence might be quite graphic.
“The medical examiner will detail the stab wounds to the heart, liver, and lungs, each penetrating about five inches deep,” stated Gina Mitchell, the public defender, during opening arguments.
She added that the jury would see the victim’s heart removed during an autopsy, highlighting the severity of the injuries.
Over 40 firefighters and EMS personnel were present in the courtroom to support the family of the 61-year-old victim, as the prosecution planned to rely on various forms of evidence, including surveillance footage and witness accounts.
“The knife was covered in blood from two people,” noted Jonathan Sercowe, an assistant district attorney. “One was Alison Russo, and the other belonged to the defendant.”
When apprehended, police found Zisopoulos still possessing the murder weapon in his pants pocket, with blood on his hands.
The accused reportedly lived with his mother and two brothers in a small apartment near the scene of the crime.
“There are indications he slept close to his mother,” Mitchell shared.
In court, Zisopoulos appeared in an orange sweatshirt and matching pants despite the warm weather and decided not to pursue an insanity defense, even though two psychiatrists had suggested it.
“The doctors believed there was a potential psychological defense here, yet your client refuses to go that route,” the judge, Usil Pandit Durant, informed Mitchell.
The date was filled with disturbing revelations, including Zisopoulos’s denial of being the person seen on video during the attack.
Mitchell, however, kept the option of mental health defenses open during her statement.
“If you conclude that the video depicts Peter Zisopoulos, then the next pressing question becomes, did he intend to harm her?” she posed. “The crucial question really is, what was going through his mind?”
The prosecution asserted that surveillance showed Zisopoulos approaching Russo-Elling from behind before attacking her multiple times, capturing the moment as he pronged down the helpless FDNY worker.
A witness, Courtney Bryson, recorded a video of the assailant wandering nearby while the victim lay bleeding.
Authorities confirmed that Russo-Elling suffered 22 stab wounds during her lunch break.
Outside the courtroom, the victim’s daughter, Daniel Fuocó, expressed her struggle in viewing the footage of her mother’s tragic fate.
“It was difficult, but we have to face this,” Fuocó remarked. “I had to be here to seek justice for my family.”
Emt John Nicosia, who witnessed the aftermath, shared during testimony that Russo-Elling was critically injured, lacking a pulse and struggling to breathe.
“I performed CPR and tried to breathe for her,” Nicosia recounted tearfully, adding, “Her clothes were soaked in blood.”
