Community Mourns Loss of Colorado Quarterback Dominic Ponder
The Colorado football community is grieving after the tragic death of quarterback Dominic Ponder, who died in a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning.
Ponder, just 23 years old, has left a significant impact on the sports world, as many expressed their condolences on social media.
Colton Allen, another quarterback from Colorado, shared heartfelt memories on Instagram, posting several pictures of them together from their time on the football team. “Dom, you were a blessing to many,” he wrote. “Your presence made everything better. I’m grateful for every lift, every practice, and every conversation we shared. I will carry those memories with me forever.”
He added, “What happened feels really final. It hurts. But I believe that God has promised us eternal life through faith, and that gives me some peace now. This isn’t the end of your story.” Allen concluded with, “I love you, brother. Thank you for everything. Until we meet again.”
Head coach Deion Sanders also expressed his sorrow, stating, “God comfort Ponder’s family, friends, and loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was loved, respected, and a natural leader. Let’s pray for everyone who knew him.”
Athletic Director Fernando Lobo noted his heartbreak over Ponder’s passing, sharing a quote from Psalm 34:18, “The Lord attends to the brokenhearted.” He expressed admiration for how Ponder approached his time at the university, saying, “Rest in peace, Dominic.”
Ponder previously played for Bethune-Cookman in Daytona, Florida, and the school expressed its deep sadness over his passing, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates.”
Additionally, Colorado’s rival team extended sympathies, saying, “We stand with @CUBuffsFootball and the entire Buffs community at this heartbreaking time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ponder family and everyone who knew and loved Dominic.”
The accident occurred when Ponder’s Tesla Model 3 reportedly collided with a guardrail and a utility pole, then rolled down an embankment and caught fire, as per a statement from the Colorado State Patrol. Investigations are ongoing, with speed believed to be a contributing factor.
Ponder joined the Colorado football team as a walk-on in 2024 following his transfer from Bethune-Cookman.
