Jimmy Carter dies at 100 years old

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle expressed an outpouring of sympathy following the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday.
“I join all Americans in honoring President Carter's life service, first as a naval officer, then as a senator in the Georgia State Assembly, then as governor of Georgia, and finally as president of the United States.”Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) said in a statement Sunday.
“Jennifer and I send our deepest condolences to the Carter family.”
“Today, we mourn the loss of one of our most humble and dedicated public servants, President Jimmy Carter,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said in a statement.

“From his accomplishments as president, to his dedication to improving human rights around the world, to his tireless efforts with his wife, Rosalyn, to build a better world through Habitat for Humanity, he is an unwavering champion of justice and equality. You have inspired millions of people with your efforts,” Schumer said.

Mr. Carter died Sunday afternoon at the age of 100, his nonprofit foundation, the Carter Center, announced.
Both Republicans and Democrats quickly sent condolences to his family and praised his lifelong service, especially after his one term in the White House.
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D.N.Y.) said on the “He was a great humanitarian.”

“Today, I join Americans across the country in mourning the loss of our 39th president, Jimmy Carter,” said Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.), a native of Carter's home state of Georgia. “Born in a small town in Georgia, President Carter's public service, leadership, humanitarian work, and dedication to the Christian spirit touched the lives of countless people.”
“President Carter has restored honest competency, integrity and humility to the Office of the President,” said U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Peach State.
“He led our country with foresight and courage, even though his Southern heritage diminished him in the eyes of many,” Johnson said in a statement. “I don't know of anyone who has had a greater impact on humanity than President Carter since his inauguration.

Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., a member of Georgia's congressional delegation on the other side of the aisle, said Sunday that the nation “lost a great Georgian.”
“President Jimmy Carter was a distinguished public servant, a proud farmer, an accomplished Navy veteran, and a graduate of the Naval Academy,” Scott said. “Even after leaving the White House, President Carter continued his efforts to serve those in need…His legacy lives on in the namesake of the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23).”
