Trinidad Chambliss Takes Legal Action for Extra Year
Trinidad Chambliss is gearing up for his sixth season in college football, but he’s facing some hurdles. Recently, lawyers for the Mississippi State quarterback have filed a lawsuit against the NCAA. Their goal? To secure a preliminary and permanent injunction that would allow Chambliss to play another year at Ole Miss, as reported by ESPN.
This new legal twist comes after the NCAA denied Chambliss a year of eligibility earlier this month. They cited a lack of adequate medical documentation showing he experienced an “incapacitating injury or illness,” despite the fact that Chambliss is 23 and hails from the University of Mississippi.
Chambliss has mentioned that ongoing respiratory issues during his time at Ferris State University resulted in him missing his sophomore season. This backdrop adds another layer to the legal battle.
The lawsuit criticizes the NCAA’s approach, claiming they have neglected their responsibility to support Chambliss’s health and development as a student-athlete. “In Trinidad’s case, the NCAA failed in its mission,” the lawsuit states. The attorneys assert that a waiver exists to grant Chambliss an additional year of play, but it hasn’t been applied properly.
Moreover, the document goes on to say that the NCAA is acting inconsistently—treating Chambliss’s situation piecemeal rather than considering the overall context, which raises questions about the fairness of their decision-making process.
Chambliss’s legal team, consisting of Tom Mars and William Liston, contends that the NCAA has committed a malicious breach of contract with Ole Miss, suggesting that the organization is not handling matters responsibly.
Interestingly, Mars mentioned that officials from Mississippi State submitted an extensive 91 pages of Chambliss’s medical records to the NCAA. Additionally, the quarterback’s doctor pointed out that Chambliss faced challenges like “recurrent throat infections” and fatigue during the 2022-2023 academic year.
Even with his eligibility uncertain, Chambliss is ready to move forward—he has reportedly signed a contract to play with Ole Miss for the upcoming season, valued at $6 million, which includes various incentives.
