Rodman Signs Lucrative Deal with Washington Spirit
In a significant move for women’s soccer, Trinity Rodman has decided to stay in the United States, joining the ranks of the highest-paid female soccer players globally.
Rodman has inked a new contract with the Washington Spirit in the NWSL, ensuring her presence on the team through 2028. According to her agent, Mike Senkowski of Upper 90 Sports Group, her annual salary will exceed $1 million.
“I’ve made the DMV my home and the Spirit my family; this is where I want to kick off the next chapter of my career,” she expressed in a statement. “I’m really proud of what we’ve built since I started and thrilled about where we’re headed. We’re aiming for championships and raising the bar, and I’m eager to continue this journey with my teammates and the amazing fans in the NWSL.”
Once her contract concludes at the end of 2025, Rodman will enter free agency, raising some eyebrows over her recent signing.
The daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, she drew interest from several top international clubs.
ESPN reported earlier that some teams, particularly from England, have made proposals to Rodman, noting that matching the Spirit’s offers would be challenging due to the NWSL’s salary cap constraints.
Attempts to finalize a deal back in November involved backloading a four-year contract worth over $1 million annually, but Commissioner Jessica Berman intervened, stating it was “against the spirit of the league.”
To counter the potential loss of a talent like Rodman, the NWSL’s board of governors introduced the “High Impact Player Rule.” This rule permits teams to allocate up to $1 million above the contract cap for standout players meeting specific performance and marketability criteria.
“Trinity is a generational player who embodies the future of this club and women’s soccer,” stated Michelle Kang, owner of the Washington Spirit. “This deal signifies our commitment to elite talent. We aim to build a club that consistently competes for championships and nurtures world-class players.”
Rodman, who was selected as the second overall pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft at just 18, has quickly become a prominent figure not only in the league but also on the U.S. Women’s National Team.
