Tropical storm leads to ground stops, creating travel disruptions at East Coast airports like JFK and LGA

A tropical storm approaching the Gulf of Mexico led to significant delays at major East Coast airports on Monday evening, notably affecting JFK and LaGuardia.

The Federal Aviation Administration implemented multiple ground stops at numerous airports from Florida to New York, extending into the evening and resulting in delays of up to four hours.

New York City faced flash flood warnings Monday night, and the situation was particularly chaotic at JFK and LaGuardia airports, where flight delays were accumulating. At JFK, departures were running about 3 hours and 15 minutes late, while LaGuardia continued to manage delays, holding all flights until at least 6:15 PM.

Meanwhile, Newark International Airport, while not as impactful as its New York counterparts, also implemented delays, expecting waits of approximately 3 hours and 21 minutes for all flights until at least 7 PM.

Other airports grappling with similar issues included Boston Logan International, Baltimore/Washington International, Ronald Reagan Washington National, Denver International, and Dulles International in Virginia.

Forecasts for Florida indicate a week of heavy rain starting Tuesday, alongside a cold front pushing the storm towards the East Coast.

By the end of the day, approximately 7,875 flights across the U.S. were delayed. Additionally, around 1,457 flights were cancelled entirely, with around 716 of those impacting JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark.

A severe thunderstorm had already resulted in comparable delays at these major airports the previous Tuesday, indicating a challenging summer travel season ahead.
