Kennedy Takes Action on Vaccine Advisory Committee

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced the removal of all members from the CDC’s independent vaccine panel, citing ongoing conflicts of interest as a reason for this decision.

In an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, Kennedy emphasized that the change is essential to “re-establish public confidence in vaccine science.”

“Vaccines have become a divisive issue in American politics, but there is one thing all parties can agree on: The U.S. faces a crisis of public trust. Whether toward health agencies, pharmaceutical companies, or vaccines themselves, public confidence is waning,” Kennedy stated.

“A clean sweep is needed to re-establish public confidence in vaccine science. The public must know that unbiased science—evaluated through a transparent process and insulated from conflicts of interest—guides the recommendations of our health agencies,” he added.

Kennedy’s actions included disbanding the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which has significant sway in vaccine recommendations and eligibility criteria for different groups. Established in 1964, ACIP advises both the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services on vaccination issues.

Kennedy criticized the committee for being “plagued with persistent conflicts of interest” and noted that it has never recommended against any vaccine.

“ACIP evaluates the safety, efficacy, and clinical need of the nation’s vaccines and passes its findings on to the CDC. The committee has become little more than a rubber stamp for any vaccine. It has never recommended against a vaccine—even those that were later withdrawn for safety reasons. It has failed to scrutinize vaccine products given to babies and pregnant women,” he remarked.

He indicated that the 17 members of the committee will be “retired,” pointing out that some were last-minute appointments from the Biden administration. Without this removal, Kennedy believes the current administration could not significantly change membership until 2028.

This move aligns with HHS’s broader initiative to address corruption and conflicts of interest within federal healthcare, striving to return to a “gold standard” for vaccine research aimed at rebuilding public trust, independent of any pro or anti-vaccine stance.
