Dolphins Seek New General Manager with Help from Troy Aikman

A Pro Football Hall of Famer is stepping in to assist the Miami Dolphins in their quest for a new general manager.

Former Dallas Cowboys star and current ESPN analyst Troy Aikman has been brought on board as a consultant for Miami’s search. This news comes from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

It’s important to note that Aikman isn’t in the running for the position himself. The general manager role has been open since the Dolphins dismissed Chris Grier on Halloween after more than nine years in charge of the front office.

Aikman is expected to participate in interviews as part of his consulting duties, which is reminiscent of the team’s previous approach when they hired former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers for a similar task two years ago. However, unlike Myers, it seems Aikman won’t stay with the organization once this search concludes.

Miami appears to be leaning towards interviewing a former scout-turned-general manager next week. According to reports, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross invited Aikman to lend his expertise due to his extensive connections across the league and for an outside perspective.

It has come to light that Aikman’s involvement in this process won’t hinder his duties as an analyst on Monday Night Football. He is set to appear for the broadcast of the 49ers-Seahawks game this Saturday.

Champ Kelly has been serving as interim general manager since Grier’s departure, marking the first time the Dolphins have looked for a replacement for Grier since they hired Dennis Hickey back in 2014.

This season started on a rough note for Miami, with a record of 2-7 before Grier was let go. They’ve managed to turn things around slightly, finishing with a 7-9 record since then. Yet, injuries to star players like Tyreek Hill have stirred concerns regarding the job security of head coach Mike McDaniel.
