Troy Jackson confronts Republican criticism due to a revived 1988 assault report.

Democrats Rally Behind Maine Candidate Amid Controversy

In a recent discussion on Fox News Digital, several Democrats expressed surprise regarding the reports about Maine’s newly nominated Senate candidate, Troy Jackson. They seemed unaware of the allegations surrounding his familial relationships, notably that he fathered two children with his second cousin.

Jackson, a former logger and ex-state Senate president, emerged as the Democratic nominee to replace Graham Platner, who stepped down following serious allegations of rape, which he denied. This nomination comes as Jackson prepares to face Republican incumbent Susan Collins in a crucial Senate race that could impact the balance of power in the Senate.

Polls indicate a tight contest, with Jackson reportedly holding a slight lead of two points over Collins, although this falls within the margin of error.

The Republican National Committee has criticized Jackson, drawing a parallel to Platner by labeling him “Graham Platner 2.0: violent and unhinged.” The National Republican Senatorial Committee featured similar sentiments, questioning whether these troubling reports warranted further scrutiny of Jackson’s candidacy.

According to police records from a 1988 incident, Jackson was involved in a physical altercation during a late-night brawl, which also allegedly involved his long-time partner, Lana Pelletier, who is his cousin. Initially, Pelletier claimed Jackson pushed her, but she now disputes that statement. The conflict reportedly stemmed from Jackson’s interactions with others at their home in Fort Kent, which escalated when he forcibly entered and engaged in a fight.

In light of these revelations, Jackson acknowledged the past incident, affirming, “I took responsibility then, and I still take responsibility.” He vehemently denied any violent behavior toward Pelletier, insisting that the altercation from decades ago is not reflective of his character today.

Pelletier supported Jackson by stating she doesn’t stand by her previous remarks and emphasized their life together as a caring family. She voiced concerns about personal attacks against Jackson, advocating for his record of service to Maine’s community over the decades.

However, Jackson’s campaign confirmed a physical confrontation occurred, resolving with a minor fine. Reports have also surfaced involving a witness claiming to have seen Jackson strike Pelletier in a separate incident, raising further questions about his conduct.

Having switched parties from being a conservative Republican to a Democrat over 20 years ago, Jackson quickly became a frontrunner for the Senate nomination. Yet, concerns persist regarding his past behavior, workplace conduct, and campaign strategy. Responding to questions about being vetted, he insisted that his two decades in Congress demonstrate his commitment and reliability to voters.

Democratic strategists are increasingly anxious that Jackson’s candidacy might echo the previous setbacks faced by the party. One strategist noted the urgency of the vetting process given recent events, suggesting the Democrats had little choice but to support their nominee.

In a show of support, Democratic senators and candidates who backed Jackson have been urged to take a stand regarding the new allegations against him. Despite facing challenges, Jackson’s platform reflects a commitment to working-class voters, advocating policies such as increased taxes on billionaires and universal health care while opposing military aid to long-standing allies. This could add complexity to his campaign as he navigates these controversies.
