A startling video reveals a garbage truck driver firing at anti-ICE protesters outside Newark’s Delaney Hall Immigration Detention Center after being blocked from his route. It was yet another night of turmoil, with clashes between Antifa activists and law enforcement.
“If I hit one of you, I’m going to jail,” the visibly frustrated driver yelled at the protesters during a tense moment captured on film.
“Come on, dude,” he later pleaded before retreating to his truck, attempting to resume his work.
Protesters donned masks and goggles, preparing for potential pepper spray from ICE agents.
In a chaotic scene, immigration officials clashed with demonstrators, using batons against those pushing against authorities. One officer was seen trying to restore order, while protesters constructed barricades from cement blocks for their own protection. All the while, detainees were seen waving from inside the detention center.
As tensions lingered, protesters vowed to remain outside, citing their intention to camp there until all detainees are freed. Over Memorial Day weekend, demonstrations grew when reports emerged of detainees staging hunger strikes to protest the facility’s conditions. Many in the crowds were seen with Antifa flags and recognizable keffiyeh scarves.
While claims of a hunger strike were vehemently dismissed by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin—who argued that conditions at the center were acceptable, pointing out that detainees receive meals and healthcare—Democratic leaders like Sen. Jerrold Nadler and Sen. Cory Booker disputed this. Nadler reported firsthand accounts of shocking conditions, including insufficient food and delays in medical treatment. Booker also echoed concerns related to healthcare access for female detainees.
The stark difference in perspectives on the treatment and conditions at Delaney Hall continues to fuel debate around immigration policies and the treatment of those within the system.
