Charges Filed After Fatal Crash in Georgia
A man faces multiple counts of vehicular homicide following a tragic accident on a Georgia highway. Authorities allege that a semi-truck came too close to a van, resulting in a fiery crash that claimed the lives of eight family members, including five children.
Kane Aaron Hammock, 33, has been charged with eight counts of second-degree vehicular homicide and additional charges related to reckless driving. This incident took place on Interstate 85 in Jackson County, around 92 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The crash unfolded on Monday at around 4:10 p.m., just south of mile marker 147 near Commerce. Reports indicate that the semi-truck collided with the rear of a Dodge Grand Caravan, triggering a chain reaction that involved four other vehicles. The impact caused the van to burst into flames, leading to the immediate deaths of all seven individuals inside. An eighth victim was later discovered at the crash site.
Though the names of the deceased have not been officially released, relatives have identified them as Kenya Ramirez, Darwin Ventura, and their son Cale. They were reportedly expecting another child. Also among the victims were Kenya’s mother, Sonia Maribel Ramirez, and her children Justin, Andy, Natali, and Evan. Family members indicated that the ages of the five children ranged from 2 to 16.
There are reports that one of the victims may have been pregnant, although this has not yet been confirmed pending an autopsy. The van involved was associated with Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters, which had been transporting 37 animals at the time of the incident. Some animals were injured, while five cats are reported missing after the crash.
