Truck Driver Charged in Fatal Virginia Crash

A truck driver, accused of causing a deadly crash in Virginia, entered the U.S. illegally in the 1990s, according to federal officials.

El Hadji Karamoko Ouattara, a 58-year-old immigrant, has been linked to an incident where a tractor-trailer veered off Interstate 81 and hit a minivan. This crash resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals, including a two-year-old. Reports indicate that three other people were also injured in the crash, although they survived.

The victims included Lorraine Renee Williams, 65, Ebony Latasha Williams, 49, and Shaziyah Leslie, 2. A 63-year-old man and a 73-year-old man were among those hurt, along with a 10-year-old girl.

Initially charged with reckless driving, authorities have now escalated the charges to three counts of manslaughter following the incident on December 22. Interestingly, Ouattara resides in Montgomery Village, Maryland.

Federal law enforcement has confirmed that Ouattara, originally from Ivory Coast, became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Reports indicate he entered the country illegally but later managed to get a green card.

This case has sparked discussions nationwide about illegal immigrant drivers on American roads, particularly as recent events have highlighted the dangers posed by untrained operators.

Earlier this month, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy addressed actions being taken to investigate states allowing non-domicile commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to be issued without adequate checks. One incident involved an Indian national, also a CDL holder, who allegedly caused a fatal accident on the Florida Turnpike.

Duffy mentioned that California has since revoked 17,000 questionable non-domicile CDLs as part of these efforts. “We’re going to use every resource to ensure that only qualified drivers are on the road,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency to enhance safety.
