David Menzies, a reporter for Canada's conservative Rebel News Network, was arrested Monday for questioning Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland after a police officer filed a trumped-up charge of assault.
A video of the event posted by Rebel News Director Ezra Levant went viral on Monday. Menzies is pictured asking Freeland about Canada. rejection Declaring Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IGRC) a terrorist organization is a common question.
As Menzies walked alongside the deputy prime minister on a public footpath, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confronted him and began arresting him, claiming Menzies had “assaulted” him.

Menzies appears to barely notice the RCMP officer as he focuses his attention on Freeland. The officer appears to have set up the basketball-style “pick” as a pretext to charge Mr Menzies, even though there was no apparent intention to assault him.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is known to dislike Rebel News, one of Canada's few conservative news organizations. In 2021, Menzies was roughed up by Trudeau's security personnel while standing on a public sidewalk to interview Trudeau at an event.

Civil liberties have declined in Canada under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
