Radio host Charlaman the God on Tuesday slammed former President Trump as a “threat to democracy” and claimed the former president “led an attempted coup.”
Charmagne, who is also host of “The Breakfast Club,” joked that he has “Trump Madness Syndrome,” echoing actor Robert De Niro, who spoke on behalf of President Biden’s reelection campaign at a news conference Tuesday near Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan.
“Let me go on record: I completely agree with Robert De Niro. I am one of those who suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Charmagne said. Fox News interview“I think he’s a threat to democracy.”
“I believe he led an attempted coup in this country,” he added, likely a reference to Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol.
Sharlaman pointed to claims that Trump tried to suspend parts of the Constitution to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which he lost to President Biden.
“At the very least, it’s not a patriotic statement,” he said.
When pressed by Fox News host Greg Gutfeld about not believing the claim, Charmagne pointed out that Trump had hinted at it in a December 2022 Truth Social post.
“Massive fraud of this kind and scale allows for the repeal of all rules, regulations and provisions, including those enshrined in the Constitution,” Trump wrote in the post.
“He said the Constitution should be suspended to overturn the election results,” Charmagne added. “He said that on Truth Social, but then said he didn’t say that.”
Last week, the radio personality said he thought both Trump and Biden, the party’s presumptive nominees, were “garbage” as candidates, but said he would vote for the candidate he thought would “protect our democracy.”
Charmagne endorsed Biden in 2020 but has declined to endorse him this time around, telling “The View” last week, “If both candidates are no good and you don’t feel like supporting one or the other, do you support an individual or do you support the fact that we need to go out and protect our democracy?”
“If I’m sitting here and I’m telling this audience that we have an individual who is threatening our democracy, that we have an individual who is saying that he wants to suspend the constitution to overturn the results of the election, that we’ve seen this individual attempt to stage a coup in this country, there are only two candidates,” he said, adding:
While the host has not endorsed Biden and has indicated he plans to vote for him, he has also been compelled to criticize the incumbent president, and last year, amid low approval ratings, he called on Biden to drop out of the presidential race.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
