Trump admin adds dozens of Chinese tech firms to export blacklist

On Tuesday, the US blacklisted more than 50 Chinese companies as it aims to crack down on the country's artificial intelligence, quantum computing and military advances.

In total, the Ministry of Commerce's Industrial and Security Bureau added 80 foreign companies to the list based on national security concerns, including companies from China, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Iran.

“Under the strong leadership of President Donald Trump, the Commerce Department is taking decisive action to protect America,” Commerce Secretary Howard Luttonick said in a statement.

“We do not allow the enemy to strengthen American troops and exploit American technology to threaten American lives,” he added.

The addition of the blacklist is intended to limit the Chinese Communist Party's ability to develop high-level quantum computing capabilities and to curb its extreme weapons programme, the US argued.

The additions include six subsidiaries of Inspur Group, China's top cloud computing and data service provider, blacklisted by the Biden administration in 2023.

According to Reuters, the Chinese embassy in Washington denounced the addition, demanding that the US “stop using military-related issues as an excuse to politicize, equipment and weaponize military-related issues.”

According to Reuters, when Inspur was on the entity list in 2023, Chip Insider said they were also trying to assess whether their companies would have to stop offering Inspur's subsidiaries.

Inspur did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the post.

Tensions have risen between China and the US in the competition to develop advanced quantum computing and AI systems.

The Trump administration's call to stop the sophisticated chip smuggling from US companies such as Nvidia and AMD has grown. Especially after China's Deepseek shook the industry with its low-cost AI model. The startup says it has developed the bot using Nvidia chips.

Nvidia declined to comment. AMD did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The addition of the blacklist is also an attempt to prevent Iran from getting more drones and defense items and disrupt the development of ballistic missile programs, the US said.

“Entity lists are one of many powerful tools for identifying and blocking foreign enemies who are trying to misuse American technology for malignant purposes,” Jeffrey Kessler, Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, said in a statement.
