Trump Admin. Push Against Campus Antisemitism Like Germany in ’30s

On WBUR's “Here Now” broadcast on Monday, Columbia University professor Reinhold Martin, who serves as president of the Columbia University Professors' Association chapter, spoke only for himself, but in response to the Trump administration's push to campus anti-semitism, he said, “New York in 2025 needs the 1933 echo and Berlin.”

co-host Scotton asked. [relevant exchange begins around 3:25] “You know, this administration has warned 60 other universities that if the administration doesn't address its anti-Semitic harassment considerations on campus, it can withhold federal funds. What are you seeing on campus nationwide now?”

Martin said, “Yes, well, it's a place we think we're already seeing. Already, faculty and staff. And we know that from the expression of solidarity we've received from all over the country, we're looking at Colombia. But we can't do this alone.

Ton then asked what help Martin needs.

Martin said, “We need a little more robust public and political action on the part of civil servants, academic administrators. Our civil servants are not particularly robust in defending the institutions of higher education they send. So we need to understand this as a coordinated attack written in Project 2025, etc. Now it's being carried out not only in one institution, Columbia, universities, universities, but also in higher education institutions in the United States.”
