The Trump administration has rejected special requests for the delivery of Colorado River water from Mexico to Tijuana.
Justifying the decision, the US State Department denounced on Thursday that it failed to comply with the terms of the historic water partnership agreement signed between the two countries in 1944.
“Mexico's continued shortage in water delivery under the 1944 Water Sharing Treaty is destroying American agriculture, particularly the farmers of the Rio Grande Valley.”announcementSocial Platform X via the Western Hemisphere station.
“As a result, for the first time today, the US will deny the non-therapeutic demand for special delivery channels for the waters of Mexico's Colorado River to reach Tijuana,” the agency added.
1944 ConventionIt also created the Joint International Boundary Water Commission, which is responsible for managing the delivery time of shared waters according to the five-year distribution cycle, focusing on “Utilizing the Colorado, Tijuana and Rio Grande waters.
Under the agreement, the US will send the Colorado River water to Mexico. Mexico acquires 1.5 million acres of resources each year. The historical current of the Colorado River stretched from the Colorado origin to the Gulf of California in Sonora, Mexico, but that current is now tapering near the border.
As a basis for comparison, states in the Colorado River Basin in the United States qualify for 15 billion acre feet, with the average American household consuming about one acre of water per year.
The 1944 treaty also directs Mexico to deliver Rio Grande Water to its northern neighbors. However, over the years, Mexico has acquired substantial water debt for the Rio Grande, and has been late in paying for water sharing.
Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum responded to reporters over last week's refusal to water supply I explained the denial As a “important issue,” he noted that it was being addressed by the International Boundary Water Commission and the Mexican national water operator Conagua.
“There's little water,” Shainbaum said. “This is part of the problem, and that's why it's important.”
