Trump admin slashes $400 million in grants and contracts from Columbia University over attacks from anti-Israel protesters

Trump administration announcement The end of Columbia University's $400 million worth of grants and contracts after the facility failed to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitic attacks.

The cuts were made by the Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education and the U.S. Office of General Services, according to a statement from the Department of Education on Friday.

“Columbia has waived that obligation to Jewish students studying on its campus.”

Anti-Israel protesters organized destructive demonstrations to force universities to be forced from Israeli-owned businesses or companies that financially benefit Israel. The Trump administration has argued that the university hasn't done enough to curb protests and protect Jewish students from “harassment.”

The statement said this was the first round of impact and other actions would follow.

This action was attributed to a joint task force to combat anti-Semitism.

“The Task Force continues to review and coordinate across federal agencies and identify additional cancellations that can be made quickly. The DOJ, HHS, ED, and GSA are taking this action as members of the Joint Task Force to combat anti-Semitism. Columbia University currently holds more than $5 billion in federal grant commitments.

The group said it contacted Columbia University on Tuesday about anti-Semite harassment but did not receive a response from university officials.

“Universities must comply with all federal prevention laws when receiving federal funds,” read the statement from Education Secretary Linda McMahon.

“For too long, Columbia has renounced that obligation to Jewish students studying on its campus,” she added. “Today, we show Columbia and other universities that we no longer tolerate their horrific inaction.”
