Trump administration cancels Biden-era abortion policy for veterans

The Trump administration has rolled back abortion regulations from the Biden era, enabling veterans to access abortion within their medical benefits. On Friday, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced it was overturning 2022 rules that allowed certain pregnant veterans and VA beneficiaries to receive abortion counseling and services.

The department stated, “We will take this action so that the VA only provides the health services needed to our country’s heroes and their families.” This change aims to ensure taxpayer funds are not used for abortion services.

A release noted that the VA has the legal right to prohibit abortion services under its medical benefits package. “From 1999 to 2022, that’s what the VA did. It wasn’t until 2022 that the VA secretary changed this policy,” officials explained.

However, the VA clarified it will not stop providing abortion care in situations where the life of the mother is at risk, such as during ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages.

Republican lawmakers endorsed the decision, criticizing the Biden administration for its previous actions. They argued that the 2022 changes were unlawful and expressed their commitment to reversing what they described as an unfavorable policy. “Taxpayers don’t want their hard-earned money spent on abortions,” they contended, emphasizing the VA’s focus on delivering healthcare and benefits to veterans.

On the flip side, others believe these policy changes, particularly following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, could adversely affect military personnel and their families by stripping away constitutional abortion rights. Katie O’Connor, a senior director at the National Center for Women’s Law, claimed the rollback is a “direct attack” on those who have served, exacerbating the challenges veterans face.

“When extremist lawmakers impose harsh abortion bans, this only worsens the crisis created by those laws,” O’Connor said, adding that denying access to reproductive services, including abortion, poses greater risks to the health and safety of veterans already confronting unique challenges, such as PTSD and military sexual trauma.
