Trump Administration Designates European Antifa Affiliates as Terrorist Organizations
The Trump administration plans to label four European Antifa affiliates as foreign terrorist organizations, aiming to disrupt violent networks globally, according to a State Department official.
The groups include Germany’s Antifa Ost, Italy’s International Revolutionary Front, and Greece’s Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense. This move adds them to the State Department’s list, which already features entities like al-Qaeda and ISIS. The official referred to this as the “first batch of designations.” Being designated as a foreign terrorist organization criminalizes actions such as providing “material support,” which includes funding, and helps keep members out of the U.S. Additionally, victims of attacks by these groups are allowed to seek compensation through lawsuits in U.S. courts.
According to the State Department, these four European groups and the broader Antifa movement have been accused of using violence against those they view as opponents of Marxist and anarchist ideologies.
Several European authorities have linked Antifa Ost to a violent incident in Budapest in February 2023, where nine individuals were attacked using hammers and pepper spray.
The International Revolutionary Front has reportedly conducted a “severely violent campaign” in Italy, which includes an attempted bombing and the assassination of an official related to nuclear programs. Moreover, the Armed Proletarian Justice Group has claimed responsibility for attempting to bomb a police building in Athens, while the Revolutionary Class Self-Defense Group has taken credit for various bombings against railway companies and government facilities, allegedly in support of Palestinian causes.
Senator Eric Schmidt from Missouri has recently consulted with Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s team about potential sanctions against these Antifa-related extremists. He expressed his gratitude to Secretary Rubio for addressing the issue and emphasized the need to hold these extremist groups accountable for their actions.
In September, President Donald Trump had already labeled the Antifa movement a “Domestic Terrorist Organization” and had ordered investigations to disrupt its illegal activities. By October, Trump indicated a desire to extend this designation to foreign groups, telling Rubio, “Let’s get it done.”
State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggott commented that anarchist, Marxist, and Antifa extremists have been involved in violent campaigns in the U.S. and elsewhere for years. He affirmed the department’s commitment to dismantling networks that threaten the foundations of the United States and Western civilization.
