Brown University has struck a deal with the Trump administration.

As part of this agreement, Brown has pledged to contribute $50 million for women’s sports, initiatives against anti-Semitism, admission practices, and programs for workforce development.

In exchange, federal research grants to Brown University will be reinstated.

According to CBS News:

Brown University, having terminated contracts with the Trump administration, has now restored research grants to educational institutions in return for commitments regarding women’s sports, anti-Semitism, and hospitalization practices, alongside the $50 million donation to workforce development initiatives.

Situated in Rhode Island, Brown becomes the third Ivy League university to enter into agreements with administrations that have faced criticism from various campuses. Earlier this month, Columbia University agreed to pay a $200 million settlement to the federal government, while the University of Pennsylvania expanded its contracts with the government concerning transgender athletes.

Under the recently announced three-year contract, the federal government also agreed to lift the freeze on health and human services grants for educational institutions and to end investigations into non-discrimination claims against universities.

The university indicated that it has lost numerous federal grants and has yet to reclaim over $50 million tied to NIH funding, with losses accruing at over $3 million weekly.

Brown has reportedly not paid any fines to the federal government.

CNN noted:

In a letter to the university community, Paxon stated that Brown “is not paying the federal government or fines.”

This contrasts with Columbia’s arrangement, where the institution will pay $200 million to the US Treasury over three years, alongside an additional $21 million to settle the US Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity investigation.

Paxon described the deal as a voluntary agreement aimed at upholding Brown’s mission, reiterating that the government does not dictate the university’s curriculum or academic discourse. Supporting workforce development programs, she mentioned, aligns with the university’s community engagement objectives and has become a priority for the Trump administration.

It appears to be another win for the Trump administration.
