New Incentives for Self-Deportation Announced
The Trump administration has introduced additional incentives designed to encourage illegal immigrants to voluntarily leave the United States. Those who utilize the CBP Home App for this purpose will receive free flights back to their home countries, a $1,000 scholarship, and even allowances for fines accrued from previous deportation orders, as stated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This initiative is part of the administration’s broader strategy aimed at the efficient removal of undocumented immigrants.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized in a statement, “If you’re here illegally, you’re using the CBP Home App to manage your departure and receive financial support to return home.” She further cautioned that failure to avail this opportunity could result in fines, arrests, and deportation, emphasizing the importance of taking proactive steps.
Since President Trump took office, the administration has gradually implemented a mix of incentives and penalties in pursuit of its goals regarding illegal immigration. The CBP Home App replaces the Biden-era CBP One app and includes features allowing users to declare their intention to leave the country and verify that they have done so.
Earlier this year, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services started a new registration requirement for illegal immigrants, mandating that many submit personal information or risk facing substantial financial penalties, which can accumulate to nearly $1,000 per day for failing to leave the U.S.
The DHS reports that around 9,000 fines have been issued to undocumented immigrants, equating to a total of about $3 billion in financial penalties. In light of this, the agency is now presenting what it describes as a “historical opportunity” for those willing to self-deport with supportive measures, including the free flight and scholarship.
Noem notes, “If you’re here illegally, self-deporting is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the U.S. to avoid arrest.” This initiative not only benefits immigrants seeking to return home but also aligns with the administration’s ambitious deportation targets while reducing the burden on federal resources typically expended during mass arrest operations.
According to the DHS, the average cost associated with arrest, detention, and removal of a single illegal immigrant exceeds $17,000. The White House estimates that implementing the CBP Home App could potentially reduce these deportation expenses by around 70%, accounting for the costs of the offered benefits.
