Release of Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination Documents
On Monday, the Trump administration made public a significant amount of documents concerning the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who was killed in April 1968.
“Today, after almost 60 years of unanswered questions regarding Dr. King’s assassination, we are unveiling 230,000 files related to this tragic event,” stated the director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard.
The documents, released in partnership with the Department of Justice, the CIA, the National Archives, and the FBI, provide details of the federal investigation into the shooting at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, which resulted in King’s death at age 39.
As noted by the Director of National Intelligence, the files include information about assassin James Earl Ray’s plot, which involved discussions with his former cellmate, as well as potential leads that the FBI investigated following the shooting.
“Americans have been waiting for nearly six decades to fully understand the depth of the federal investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” Gabbard remarked. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are committed to ensuring that nothing is left unexamined regarding this critical chapter in our nation’s history.”
Gabbard also expressed her gratitude to King’s family for their continued support.
This release came after President Trump signed an executive order in January directing the disclosure of documents related to King’s assassination, as well as those concerning former President John F. Kennedy and former Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
This situation is still developing, so stay tuned for updates.
