Trump Administration Takes Action Against Columbia University
The Trump administration has accused Columbia University of breaching Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and is urging the agency to revoke its accreditation.
This move marks a significant increase in the tensions between the administration and various universities regarding how they handle violence from pro-Palestinian activists, especially since the recent conflict in the Middle East.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated, “This is not only immoral, it is also illegal. Accredited institutions hold a significant public responsibility, especially concerning federal student aid.”
Columbia University’s accreditation is in question because it has allegedly shown “deliberate indifference to the harassment of Jewish students.” This situation follows the devastating Hamas attacks on southern Israel in 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 fatalities and provoked a military response from Israel, targeting militant groups in the Gaza Strip. In the U.S., supporters of Hamas have staged protests to counter Israeli military operations, some of which have turned violent.
McMahon emphasized that Columbia’s leaders have not taken adequate measures to safeguard Jewish students from threats and intimidation, noting, “The response from the university has, in fact, been intentionally indifferent.” If Columbia were to lose its accreditation, it would be unable to apply for federal student loans and Pell grants.
She expressed anticipation about providing the committee with updates on actions taken to meet accreditation standards and comply with federal civil rights regulations.
