Trump Administration Suspends Visas for Most Holders of Palestinian Passports

Visa Approval Suspension for Palestinian Passport Holders

The State Department has paused visa approvals for nearly all holders of Palestinian passports, as confirmed by various sources, including the New York Times.

This suspension impacts nearly all visa categories—student, business, family-related travel, and medical. The New York Times cites four anonymous U.S. officials, stating that the State Department has directed diplomats to enforce new restrictions on guidance sent to U.S. embassies and consulates as of August 18. Interestingly, the restrictions do not seem to affect individuals who have already obtained an additional passport or visa.

The State Department has not responded to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Earlier in July, the Ministry of State announced that it would impose lightweight restrictions on Palestinians applying for non-immigrant visas. They stated that applications from Palestinian officials would not be accepted, emphasizing actions that reportedly internationalize the conflict with Israel and continue support for terrorism, including incitement to violence.

In a press release, it was mentioned that imposing consequences is in the national security interests of the U.S., holding the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Palestinian Authority (PA) accountable for their commitments, which some believe undermine the peace process.

In late August, the administration escalated efforts to block Palestinian officials from participating in the UN General Assembly, reinforcing its stance on this issue.

Since the commencement of President Donald Trump’s second term in January, the U.S. has tightened its grip on Palestinian activities. The situation escalated on university campuses following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas War on October 7, 2023, leading to protests where the federal government faced scrutiny over foreign influences. Reports have indicated that some pro-Palestinian protesters facing deportation were, in fact, on student visas.
