New Sanctions Imposed on Iran’s Nuclear Program
The UN announced another set of sanctions on Wednesday aimed at Iran’s nuclear program, following measures taken the previous week.
This round targets five individuals and several companies linked to Iran’s Defense Innovation Research Institute (SPND), which plays a crucial role in the nation’s nuclear ambitions. Despite significant setbacks from US strikes at various nuclear sites, including Ford, Natanz, and Esfahan, Iran appears to be pressing forward with its nuclear goals.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “The US is enacting snapback sanctions against the Iranian regime. These new sanctions and export controls focus on 44 entities connected to Iran’s nuclear, missile, and military initiatives.” He emphasized that this is part of an ongoing effort to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Among those targeted is Reza Mozaffarinia, the current director of SPND, who is reportedly involved in acquiring dual-use weapons and advancing technologies tied to nuclear arms. His actions had previously been flagged by the Treasury Department during Barack Obama’s administration. The sanctions also extend to several scientists involved in various capacities within Iran’s nuclear programs.
One of the companies sanctioned, Andisheh Damavand International Technologies, has been implicated in facilitating Iranian nuclear scientists in sourcing materials from Russia. The firm’s CEO, Ali Kalband, has been authorized to procure foreign materials for nuclear devices.
Despite international pressure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed unwavering confidence, claiming that Western measures have failed to deter Iran and asserting that the country has achieved “high levels of uranium enrichment.”
The UN’s latest sanctions were initiated on September 27 in response to what it termed a “significant delinquency” in Iran’s commitments to refrain from enriching weapons-grade uranium.
The State Department did not provide immediate comment when approached for additional information on the matter.
